Dancers: Meredith Fages, Lea Fulton and Josselyn Levinson- Dustin
Musicians: Brady Bagger, James Sparber, Jeff Mensch
Choreography/ Direction: Elisabeth Motley
Brought up in a military family, choreographer Motley considers how much of the Marine Corps lifestyle has carried over to her art practice. Drill Piece examines military custom, ritual and tradition in relationship to performance. Inspired by the changing of the guard at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the United States Marine Corps Silent Drill Team and basic training, the work draws comparison between the choreography and ritual present in both the military and an ensemble of female performers.
Musical ensemble Colonna Sonora performs live with keyboard synthesizers, drum machine, bass guitar, electric guitar, and microphone. Interacting with a vocal processor that distorts and loops their voices, the dancers explore the existing military language of metaphors with which we describe our lives. Drill Piece explores a narrative thread of “dream logic” and searches to discover order within a chaotic environment.
